The history of the Derby d’Italia

Juventus FC and Inter Milan have been meeting each other since 1909, making the game one of the most played matches in Serie A. Despite this, the rivalry between them has only existed since the 1960s. The expression ‘Derby d’ Italia’ was coined in 1967 by journalist Gianni Brera. Both clubs represented the major cities of Northern Italy and were fierce competitors in the race for the prizes. There was a lot of commotion in mutual matches and the Milanese were often of the opinion that the Italian federation and referees favoured the Turin club.

When a major bribery scandal was discovered in Italian football in 2006, Juventus FC was especially punished. The club was demoted to Serie B, and Inter Milan were declared champions. Inter also took over some key players, such as Zlatan and Viera, from the Zebras. This made the mutual relations worse than they already were.

Today, Juventus FC and Inter Milan are still fierce competitors in the battle for Italian trophies. As a result, in a full Allianz Stadium, you are assured of a top match that is full of Italian passion.

Juventus FC – Inter Milan: the most memorable derbies

The encounters between Juventus FC and Inter Milan are often a succession of riots, fierce accusations and scandals. We have listed three characteristic Derby d’Italias for you.

June 10, 1961: Juventus FC – Inter Milan 9 – 1

On this day, Juventus achieved its biggest win in the Derby d’Italia. It was no less than 9-1, although there is a caveat to this. The game had already been played two months earlier. After half an hour, the game was halted due to a pitch invasion by spectators. The Italian federation followed the rules and declared Inter the winner. Weeks later, on the evening before the last day of play, the federation reversed this decision and decided to have the game replayed. This decision made Juventus FC immediately champion. The furious Inter board sent a youth team to Turin in protest. Juventus showed no compassion and defeated the young Bianconeri 9-1. The incident further deteriorated the relationship between the two clubs.

April 26, 1998: Juventus – Inter Milan 1 – 0

This Derby d’Italia was even more loaded than usual. The match would be decisive in the mutual title race. A week earlier, Juventus had won 0-1 at Empoli, after a crystal-clear equalizer was rejected. This to the great anger of Inter, which therefore remained 1 point behind. In Turin, Juventus FC could now create a decisive gap. Stadion delle Alpi was even completely sold out. After 21 minutes, Alessandro Del Piero put Juventus at 1-0. Deep into the second half, Inter striker Ronaldo appeared to be blocked in the penalty area. Inter was screaming for a penalty. Referee Ceccarini refused to put the ball on the spot.

While the Inter players attacked the leader, Zidane handily launched Del Piero in the counter. It went down in Inter’s penalty area, and now the referee blew for a penalty. Then total chaos broke out. Inter coach Diego Simeone was referred to the stands by the arbitrator. Del Piero missed the penalty, but it remained at 1-0. Juventus FC was thus certain of the title. For Inter, this was yet another proof that Juventus was favoured by the arbitration. The match is known by fans from Milan as ‘la grande ruberia’, or ‘the great robbery’.

December 5, 2009: Juventus FC – Inter Milan 2-1

The tension had already risen considerably in the week before the derby d’Italia. There were indications that Inter striker Balotelli would be racially treated by the Juventus supporters. Juve president Blanc and the widow of club legend Mirella Scirea wrote to the ultragroups urging them to behave. Fortunately, there were no racist chants, but that was about all. Inter’s bus was pelted on arrival with everything Juve fans could get their hands on. The match itself degenerated into a protracted fight. The harvest: seven bookings, red for Juve player Melo, and Inter coach Mourinho who was sent to the stands after 20 minutes after a cynical applause for the referee. In the end it was Juventus FC that won 2-1 thanks to a late goal and narrowed the deficit to 2 points.

Players who played for both clubs

In most European countries, transfers between two major rivals are unheard of. Remarkably enough, this is much less the case in Italy. Many of the greatest players in Serie A have played for at least two major clubs. Despite the great rivalry, there are about 40 players in history who played for both Juventus FC and Inter Milan. There are even eight players who not only played for these two clubs, but also for AC Milan.

Arturo Vidal came from his native Chile to Bayer Leverkusen in 2007, where he made a big impression. After four seasons, Juventus FC brought the midfielder to Turin for around €10 million. He also grew into an important force there, who managed the midfield together with Paul Pogba. After four seasons and as many league titles , Vidal moved to Bayern Munich, and then to FC Barcelona. In 2020, Vidal moved to Inter, where he won his ninth league title in his first season.

Andreo Pirlo owes his nickname ‘Il Maestro’ to his great playing at AC Milan and Juventus FC. At AC Milan, he won both the Champions League and the European Supercup twice. After ten seasons, he moved to Juventus FC, where he won the league title four more times. Few people will remember, however, that Pirlo also played at Inter Milan in his early days. He took over from Brescia at the age of 19. In three seasons, l’architetto played only 22 games for Inter, and was loaned out to Reggina and Brescia. In 2001, he was sold to city rivals AC Milan, where he became a world-class player. At Inter, people do not like to be reminded of this sale.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic came over from Ajax to Juventus FC in 2004. He played there for two seasons and won the national title both times. Subsequently, Juventus FC was returned to Serie B due to the bribery scandal. Many top players left the club. Zlatan signed with Inter Milan, just like his club mate Patrick Viera. Zlatan played for Inter Milan for three years, and again won the Scudetto three times. In the summer of 2009 he left for FC Barcelona. Inter received €46 million plus Samuel Eto’o for this.

The football fairy tale of Salvatore ‘Totò’ Schillaci started in Sicily, where he grew up in a poor family and played for the club Messina. At 25, he surprisingly moved to Juventus FC, as Serie B top scorer. Even more startling was that, without any international experience, he was the last player to be included in the national squad for the 1990 World Cup. In the first game against Austria, he came on as a substitute, and scored the 1-0. After that, he continued to score winning goals from scratch at the World Cup.

The Sicilian scored six goals and became the top scorer and best player of the World Cup. As a result, the whole world knew the phenomenon of Schillaci. Back at Juventus FC, however, he was unable to live up to the huge expectations. In 1992 he left for Inter Milan. Partly due to injuries, he never lived up to his fame, and the striker scored 11 goals in 30 matches. After two years, the Sicilian left for Japan to conclude his career there.

Edgar Davids started his Italian career at AC Milan, but made the switch to Juventus FC after a year and a half. At DeOude Dame, he experienced his best period as a player and grew into one of the best players in Europe. Davids was three times national champion and played 226 games for the Zebras. After six seasons, Davids was loaned to FC Barcelona for one year. The Spaniards then wanted to take him over, but the clubs did not come to an agreement. That is why the Pitbull left for competitor Inter Milan. Partly due to injuries, he never reached his top level again. After one year and 14 games, the Dutchman left again. Davids had short and unsuccessful stints with Tottenham Hotspur, Ajax, Crystal Palace and Barnet FC before ending his career and starting a coaching career.

Other players who played for both Juventus FC and Inter Milan include Roberto Baggio, Hernanes and Felipe Melo.

The Allianz Stadium during the Derby d’Italia

Unlike Germany and England, few new stadiums have been built in Italy in the last 20 years. Many clubs have illustrious but outdated arenas. In that regard, Juventus FC has a big lead over the other teams in Serie A. With the Allianz Stadium, it has a brand new and ultramodern stadium, which it also owns.

With a capacity of 41,475 seats, the stadium is not overly large, but is almost always full. A relief compared to the uninviting Stadium Delle Alpi, which was much too big and also had a dirt track. The Allianz Arena is an example for all other future Italian stadiums. The stadium is completely environmentally friendly. The electricity that is consumed is produced by the capture of solar energy. Collected rainwater is used to heat the stadium, and 50% less water is needed to irrigate the pitch. This means it fully complies with the rules of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

After the opening on September 8, 2011, the Bianconeri remained unbeaten for more than a year in The Allianz Stadium. However, this record was broken by Inter Milan. That won 1-3 on November 3, 2012.

Practical information

The Allianz Stadium is located about six kilometres from the centre of Turin. The best option to get to the stadium on match days is via a combination of metro and tram. When Juventus play at home, a special tram runs to the stadium.

In the city centre, take metro line 1 towards Fermi. You get off at Bernini station. From here you take the tram, which takes you directly to the stadium in 30 minutes.

On other days, the bus is the fastest option. At Via 20 Settembre, in the heart of the city, take bus 72 or 72B (direction Via le Bruno Sper). Get off at the Stadio Alpi stop, which is within walking distance of the stadium. You can also take buses 62, 75 and VE1 from the centre.

Museum & Stadium Tour Allianz Stadium

Juventus FC is also way ahead of the other clubs in the Serie A with the club museum and the stadium tour. The Juventus Museum was opened in 2012 and has since been regularly expanded and modernized. The exhibition areas are fully bilingual (Italian and English). Of course, you will find all information about the history of the club there. But there’s more. In the room ‘The Team’ you can virtually ‘meet’ the current players and hear their stories. In the VR Virtual Room you can experience what it is like to become a Juventus player. The stadium is open daily from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM (until 7:30 PM in spring and summer), except Tuesdays. The museum is closed on this day. The price is €15 for adults and €12 for young people under 16. Admission for children under 6 is free.

You can also opt for the Museum & Allianz Stadium Tour. Led by a guide, you will be guided for an hour and you will visit the hospitality area, the changing rooms, the Media Area and the field. The tour is given in Italian. However, at the ticket office you can get an audio guide in English, French, Spanish and German. The tour is given several times daily, except on Tuesdays. Booking in advance is definitely recommended. The price for the Stadium Tour and a visit to the Juventus Museum is €25 for adults and €20 for young people under 16.

You can also opt for the Museum & Matchday Tour. You will then be given a tour while you see the hectic pace of a race approaching in a few hours. This tour can be combined with your visit to the competition. Reservation is absolutely necessary. For the Matchday & Museum Tour, you pay €30 and young people under 16 €27.

Where do the Juventus fans eat and drink?

The Allianz Stadium is located in a quiet residential area six kilometres from the centre of Turin. That is why many fans prefer to eat and drink something in the centre of the city first. Nevertheless, you will find plenty of places to visit before or after the game near the stadium.

The huge Area12 Shopping Centre is right next to the stadium. You will find dozens of shops, bars, restaurants and the major fast-food chains here. Very handy to have something to eat just before the game, or to stock up in the supermarket. You will also find the huge Juventus Club store here.

The Millegusti (Strada Altessano 146) is located opposite the Allianz Stadium and is therefore very popular as a lunch spot with the fans. It’s a small, self-service restaurant that is mostly popular with locals. The football fans mainly come there to get a drink and (great) pizza before the game. Also, the menus are excellent and certainly not expensive. On Saturday evenings, you can often enjoy live music.

In the centre of Turin, on Corso Vittorio EmanueleII, you will find the Huntsman Pub. It consists of a Scottish and an Irish pub, which together form the largest bar in Turin. They have a huge selection of beer and wine. For sports enthusiasts, football matches are shown non-stop on the many screens. The place is hugely popular with tourists and Juve fans alike.

Do you want to experience a unique local experience during your football trip? Then, you really can’t miss the legendary Birreria Manhattan, at 46 Via Errico Giachino. It is definitely not a luxury eatery where you go in your smart suit. This place is known as a cult alternative brewery, something you won’t see often in Italy. According to many, you will experience a unique, raw experience here! Rock music blares out of the speakers and bands perform regularly. You will find all the top beers on tap and the portions are huge. The delicious pizzas are the same size as the table top and are enough to feed the whole family. This unique location is open from 7.30 pm to 3 am, and even until 4 am on Saturdays.
